Laura Kosiorek-Smith

Laura began her passion with horses at the young age of four, and has been a professional in the sport for the past ten years. She is well rounded in that she has experience in many different disciplines such as eventing, dressage, hunters, and jumpers. Laura also has basic western riding knowledge. The great majority of her show horses were all started and self-developed before returning to their owners or being sold after a year or so of show experience.

Her personal horses were never easy citizens. She has had to acquire an acute feel with a tactful reaction to establish a confident relationship with each horse. She has a large understanding for reading and accessing the body language of the horse which greatly aids in effective communication between horse and rider. She has competed through training level eventing, third level dressage, 1.15 meter jumpers, and 2’6 hunters. Laura is also active in showcasing horses in the USEA FEH classes, and has competed at the East Coast Championships with great success the past three years. She enjoys working closely with breeders and owners to best showcase the young horses in not necessarily the job the horse was bred for, but the job that the horse has the desire to do. She has worked with various breeders to prep and develop youngstock, broodmares, and stallions for breed inspections and testing. Laura enjoys making her horses well rounded. They all learn how to negotiate mountain trail obstacles, various ground pole exercises, in addition to receiving a solid dressage foundation. Laura believes that education is never final, and actively seeks guidance from her mentor and friend Heidi Kohl, who works closely with the well-respected professionals George Williams and Janet Foy. She likes to ride in clinics when her schedule allows, and has ridden consistently with Ronald Postleb, Lucinda Green, Waylon Roberts, Eric Dierks, and Linda Radigan. She has also ridden in clinics with Bruce Mandeville, Doug Payne, Lendon Gray, Nona Garson, and Eric Horgan.

Laura came to Ohio on a scholarship to run on the Youngstown State University track and field team. She held the D1 school record in the hurdles for a handful of years before it was recently broken. There she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in both biology and chemistry, with a minor in fine art. Laura also works as a vet tech for a mixed practice, local veterinarian, manages schooling shows at both Stone Gate Farm and Pure Gold, and has also started judging at local schooling shows. She is married to Kevin Smith and is accompanied everywhere by her sidekick Kimber, the world’s bestest doggo.

Heather Birkmire

Heather Birkmire has been a part of the equine community for many years.  She started her learning at Shadow Facs farm with Debbie McCaughtry. During this time she had a wonderful opportunity to join in with the Erie Business Center- Equine Business Management Program, and was also an active member of Lost Hounds Pony Club.

Heather enjoys trying out different disciplines, however she has been more focused on Dressage and Eventing.  Throughout the years her main focus has been on restarting OTTB’s allowing them at their own pace, get to the level where they can find a forever home and  further their career. Heather feels her strong suit is working with the more sensitive horses, helping them build confidence and working with their owners to build the trusting partnership.
